Dimethylglycine - DMG - Pangamic acid - B15

Compound similar to vitamin B. Formerly known as Pangamic acid. Keywords: muscle problems, blood sugar imbalance, detoxification, cardiac health, good liver function, stress. Reduces withdrawal symptoms from alcohol.

Dimethylglycine is a vitamin B-like substance. DMG is composed of the amino acid glycine attached to two methyl groups. It is water soluble has anti-oxidant effects. It was formerly known as pangamic acid and vitamin B15 but it has never been recognized as a B-vitamin. It may also appear under other names such as pangamate.
Today dimethylglycine or DMG are the most commonly used names.

DMG increases the ability of the red blood cells to carry oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs. It also stimulates the white blood cells (the immune defence). It has a detoxifying effect and enhances the function of the liver.

DMG is good for muscle problems, blood sugar problems, and when having difficulties breathing. It is also used for detoxification and it curbs alcohol cravings. Lozenges of 120 mg. are used by mountaineers, technicians who work in areas with air pollution, firemen, competitive athletes, and other groups exposed to physical stress. Athletes use DMG because it enhances oxygen uptake and thereby counteracts exhaustion in the muscles. Research indicates that DMG can improve the immune function. There are also reports that mentally handicapped children that have been given a supply of DMG improve their attention and their ability of speech. DMG has also been used for lowering the frequency of epileptic attacks, but its effect in this area is quite controversial.

In nature, the substance can be found in seed kernels - especially almonds and apricot kernels - but also in brewers' yeast, rice husks, and maize. In animal products, horse liver, and ox blood are the most common sources.

DMG is non-toxic even in large doses, but pregnant- and breast-feeding women are recommended not to take the substance since studies on these conditions are lacking.
